For my project I used the symbolism of the conch, the signal fire and the pig head which is also the lord of the flies in the novel Lord of the Flies by William Golding. The conch, the signal fire and pig head are important aspects of this novel and I was interested in learning more about them and their purposes in Lord of the Flies. The signal fire represents the boys connection to civilization, want to rescue and is an important part of the book, as the book goes on the way the boys treat the fire shows their change in character and as they start to care less about the fire it shows how they grow farther from the idea of civilization. The pig head is also very important because it symbolizes power and the evil inside the boys that shows by the end of the novel and it also foreshadows Simon’s death. We discussed a lot about the importance of these symbols during class. The conch and the signal fire was one of the only symbols of power on the island and kept order and civilization and the pig’s head represented the evil of the boys. These symbols played major roles and I would like to know more about their symbolism s' and meanings.
